Chestnuts artists are volunteering their time to teach a variety of art related skills, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting our group. In early August, PYHO will be announced to the non-members—but for now, registration is reserved exclusively for Chestnuts. We want to make sure members get first choice on the workshops and you have three weeks to do so. After that time, sign up is open to everyone. To sign up, contact Rachel Blair (chestnutnews2@gmail.com) . Be sure to scroll all the way down so you can view every workshop offered. Note on supplies: Bottled water will be provided. Bring your own lunch since most of the workshops will be in the field, and bring your stool/chair for the demos.

Tuesday, September 8 – Gary Young – Being Carefully Careless

PYHO-2015_Gary Young

Description: This is a great opportunity to focus on the critical things you need to do in order to make your paintings be what you want them to be. This workshop will start and end with students painting, a lot.

We will assess where you are now, reinforcing fundamental techniques to get you to the next level. There are some recurring tendencies in all of our efforts. We will address those tendencies, resulting in your work getting closer to the emotional responses we are all seeking. Students will leave with a clear, exacting path for individual study.

Time: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Student Fee: $55

Location: Anne Goetze’s Farm at 4080 Carter’s Creek Pike, Franklin, TN 37064. There is an indoor studio there in case of rain.

Type of Workshop: Full day outdoors

Levels for this workshop: Basic knowledge of Plein Air painting

Student Limit: 10

Supply List: Bring canvas panels, plenty of paint, knife and brushes.

Wednesday, September 9 – Jean Gauld-Jaeger – Painting a Portrait From Life

PYHO-2015_Jean Gaul-Jaeger

Description: Artists will paint a head and shoulders on canvas using a live model. Instruction will be in the tradition of representational portrait painting. The landscape of the face isn’t so different from the landscape outside your window. Plein air painters already know how to “see” the environment from a painter’s point of view. Portrait painters see the beautiful landscape of the face in a similar way. A twenty-seven page booklet with color illustrations is included in the workshop.

Time: 9:30 am-4:00 pm

Student Fee: $55+ $15 for the booklet

Location: Southgate Studio at the Factory in Franklin.   We will paint in the studio under controlled lighting conditions. Coffee, water, fruit and muffins will be available in the morning.

Type of workshop: Full day

Levels for this workshop: Beginner to Advanced

Student limit: 10

Supply List:

OIL PAINT (Any brand, Winsor and Newton or Winton are ok)
37 ml tubes

  • Cadmium yellow medium
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Permanent Rose or Alizarin Crimson
  • Ultramarine blue
  • Titanium white

BRUSHES (Monarch by Winsor & Newton, suggested, not required)

  • #2 filbert (filbert shape is flat but rounded at the tip)
  • #6 short filbert
  • #10 short filbert
  • two inch cheap bristle brush

CANVAS BOARDS or STRETCHED CANVAS (Please, no canvas paper.)

  • 16” x 12”     OR     20” x 16”

PALETTE KNIFE (small plastic palette knife is okay for mixing)

TURPENOID or ODORLESS MINERAL SPIRITS

PALETTE:  I prefer a wooden palette. Disposable paper palettes do not work well for portrait painting. The palette should be a “middle” value – halfway between very dark and very light.

These are basic supplies. There is no need to buy a lot of different colors as we can mix any color we want from the basic primary colors. If you already have more paints and brushes you may bring them. This is a time to experiment and learn what is comfortable for you.

We will paint from a live model so bring a camera. You may want to refer to your photo if you decide to continue working on the painting after the workshop is concluded. Call or email me if you have questions. 615-476-2687 or jrgjaeger@aol.com.

Easels are available for your use as well as small folding tables for your use as you continue painting portraits on your own. I will always be available after the workshop by phone or email to answer questions and discuss painting issues.
