Four Chestnut members awarded in Portrait Society of America online competition
Congratulations to four Chestnut members who were awarded in the “Top 10 from Tennessee” in the Portrait Society of America online competition.
The four Chestnut members who were awarded are Carol Berning, Ann Cowden, Stephanie Helmey, and Jeremy Tummins.
As shared previously, Ann was awarded for her portrait of “Ben”. Below includes the other 3 Chestnut members.
Carol Berning:
I completed this drawing of my Vietnam veteran husband in charcoal on board. I initially planned to do a charcoal sketch in preparation for an oil painting; however, I decided the starkness of the charcoal was perfect for the subject standing in bright sunshine, his cap casting dark shadows on his face. This drawing will be included in a body of work I’m creating, “Where Are They Now?” featuring portraits of Vietnamese children and adults, as well as soldiers. The grouping will also include some landscapes. The references for the paintings are photographs my husband took when he served as an Infantry Officer in Vietnam.
Stephanie Helmey:
Faces and figures are fascinating to me, because they are so often revealing of a person’s personality and can reflect the experience, mindset and spiritual makeup of an individual. They are my very favorite subjects.
Andrew is a regular model at Warehouse 521 so I’ve painted him and drawn him many times. He has fabulous red hair and is a handsome, kind and fun young man, wonderful to paint. One day he came in a really spiffy dressy coat, tie and scarf and he looked so fabulous I had to do a larger studio portrait from my study. I’m so pleased to be included in the Top 10 Portrait Artists of Tennessee competition winners.
Jeremy Seth Tummins:
Jeremy Seth Tummins paints the landscape of his home in Humphreys county Tennessee. He began learning to oil paint in 2010 and showing work in 2015. He and his wife live beside Hurricane Creek outside McEwen.
