Still Life: Color Expanded
5 Tuesdays 9-12am (5 weeks, $245)
oil
These five weeks provide still life scenarios arranged to capitalize on color relationships. The goal each week is to complete a painted study with color that is accurate, interrelated, and glowing. Coaching will focus on strategies for seeing and mixing color, with a refresher on color theory, and directions for how you can unlock the potential of your palette. Each week will begin with warm-up exercises to calibrate seeing and mixing color. All abilities will find this a challenge since still life study allows each artist to work toward their own edge.

Advanced Still Life: Interiors
5 Tuesdays 1-4pm (5 weeks, $245)
oil or charcoal
Paintings of interiors create spaces that invite the viewer to enter. Capturing an interior is like a hybrid pursuit between still life and landscape painting. Since interiors are scenes composed of objects, they are like the setting of a play or movie – they have an innate sense of narrative due to what the contents imply. Don’t let the numerous details overwhelm you, though. Over these 5 weeks, we will look at strategies for composing and attacking these scenes so that they remain unified but detailed enough to keep it interesting. Prior experience with oil paint and oil instruction required for this class. Erin is adept at meeting you where you are and pushing you toward greater excellence.

Drawing Lab: Figure
4 Wednesdays 1-4pm (4 weeks + model fees, $246)
charcoal
Draw head-to-toe people that feel real; that have weight, lively presence, and proportion. These 4 weeks are dedicated to mastering an artist’s understanding of the human form. You will pick up tools here to help you further study and predict the figures in your own work. We will use charcoal drawings to study both structural maquettes (plaster casts, mannequins) and clothed models. The use of both will allow us to break down the functional shapes of the human body, follow the movement and gesture of the body in-action, and fine tune understanding of detailed features. Each day, targeted instruction is followed by drawing. Lots of drawing. Loads of delicious luscious drawing.

Age 15 and up, all abilities welcome. Erin is adept at meeting you where you are and pushing you toward greater excellence. To learn more about erin and see more of her work, visit www.erinjonesmartin.com

Here is a most rare opportunity in Nashville: figure drawing training in charcoal draftsmanship for young adults. Why? At age 15 I longed for such an opportunity. I had to draw family, friends, and strangers sneakily in my small sketchbook until my life drawing class in college. Learning to feel out the human form in a large scale using charcoal is deeply satisfying. I’ve since studied with realists across the country who pursue excellence in draftsmanship, and I want to bring it to my hometown, and specifically young adults. I thoroughly love opening up that door and seeing how far they can run.
