3 Portrait Workshops with Jim Himsworth
Professional portrait painter Jim Himsworth will be teaching 3 different portrait workshops this summer at Warehouse 521. Class size is small and each student will receive plenty of personal attention.
One Day Watercolor Portrait on Thursday, June 27th, 9 -4 pm.
Who’s game for portrait painting with watercolor? Come on… give it a try! Although it frightens many aspiring portrait artists, watercolor is more portable than oils, less toxic, faster drying and more challenging (in a good and fun way).
Jim wants to share his love for the medium and his love for portrait painting. He’ll help you, step by step, wash by wash, create a bold, expressive watercolor study from life.
So, if you love watercolor and want to try tackling life painting, don’t be afraid, join Jim for this super-challenge! Click here to learn more and to register.
Two Day Portrait Color Study workshop: Friday and Saturday, June 28th & 29th. 9-4 pm.
Portrait painting is arguably the most rigorous genre of representational painting because it requires mastery at many levels. Because portraiture has too many facets to study here, this workshop will focus primarily on color study.
You will learn basic color principles, color mixing and palette organization. Jim will demonstrate his method in stages so that students may progress in tandem.
Because there is no such thing as “flesh color,” the artist must discern accurate value and color relationships – and then translate those relationships using pigment. Of course, other fundamentals such as design, drawing, and value (relationships) will also be stressed. (few spaces remain)

Two Day Edges in Portraiture workshop: Friday and Saturday, July 12 & 13th. 9-4 pm.
Well-controlled edges are critical to any successful painting. They can imply motion, focus the viewer, and suggest a mood. Most especially, distinctive edges and brushwork often characterize a painter’s signature style.
This workshop will give students a rare opportunity to paint an extended, two-day pose to completion and to experiment with edge control and brushwork. Jim will demonstrate how to create various edges and where each might be used most effectively in portraiture.
So bring charcoals OR oils and let’s study Edges in Portrait Painting!
