Advanced-Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Painters welcome. Plein air experience strongly recommended. Lori Putnam’s paintings are a personal and genuine response to a scene, and she encourages her students to learn to do the same. Putnam believes that each artist sees differently and leaves his or her own, distinctive mark. Yet letting go of formulas and finding the confidence to express ourselves honestly seems difficult, sometimes even fearful. Students will leave this workshop excited; ready to experiment more on their own; and, above all, pointed toward meaningful, personal, artistic growth.
Putnam’s approachable, giving nature, energetic demonstrations, and hands-on teaching style have made her one of the most sought-after instructors of our time. Her workshops fill rapidly, and are increasingly difficult to find. Expression and Response is the only workshop she will be teaching on the West Coast in 2015.

Advanced-Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Painters welcome. Plein air experience strongly recommended. As an artist you know you see differently than the rest of the world; you feel inspired and excited by scenes and cannot wait to paint them. Throughout your painting, you loathe some passages, wonder if others are finished or overworked, and live in fear that you will “mess up” the very best parts of the painting that you actually like. In the end, your completed works do not convey your original inspiration or excitement.
Brushwork, paint consistency, and fearlessness are rarely taught. Lori Putnam believes they are essential to mastering more thrilling paintings. In this workshop, students will begin en plein air making many sketches, grasping excitement, and capturing ideas. These sketches (most with little or no detail) will then be used as inspirational material for more-complete studio pieces that remain fresh and inviting.

Advanced-Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Painters welcome. Session 1 is a 3-day workshop for intermediate to advanced students. Various subject matter will be used in both indoor and outdoor settings. (Previous plein air experience is expected.)
Advanced students may wish to combine with Flex-Workshop Session 2 to extend your learning with more complex concepts. (below)
