Understanding the Split Primary Palette
Gayle Levee
Description: We all know that, ideally, most colors can be mixed from the primaries Red, Yellow and Blue. But in real life there are limitations to that ideal. None of our pigments are absolutely pure – they are made from minerals found in nature, and we artists do our best to use those colors to approximate what we see.
The fact is, pigments are not perfect, and we need to account for that. The split primary palette helps by using a warm and a cool red, a warm and a cool yellow, and a warm and a cool blue. In this workshop we’ll learn how to arrange our palette and our thinking with these concepts in mind, and we’ll finish a painting using this palette
