Have you ever been interested in taking your paints outside and painting “en plein air”? Not sure what to bring or where to start? Jessica with lead you through the basics-from initial set up and materials, composition, color mixing and paint application. The workshop will start with a demonstration and continue with one on one help throughout the workshop.

Portable easel-There are many options from French easels, pochade boxes or simply a blanket to sit on and a folding easel to prop your painting on. 

Canvas or panel to work from. Sizes 8×10” to 12×16” is recommended.

Paints. I will be working with and doing demos in oil paint. You are welcome to bring another medium of your choice if you prefer.  Brands: I recommend Rembrandt, Windsor and Newton, Grumbacher, Old Holland, Williamsburg, Gamblin and Utrecht. Windsor and Newton strike a good balance between price and quality especially for beginners. Don’t get ones labeled “hue”. I’ll go into more detail about this palette but it will also be useful for portraits and still life. 

Cadmium Lemon Yellow or cad. Yellow light Cad. Yellow deep
Cad. Red light
Alizarin Crimson 

Ultramarine Blue
Thalo Blue (Winsor Newton Blue Green) Ivory or Mars Black
Titanium White (150 ml tube) 

Vine charcoal-1 or 2 pieces
We will provide no-odor mineral spirits or Gamsol
and a container with lid for mineral spirits.

 Paper towels-Scott’s blue paper towels, Brawny. Both are lint-free. 

Brushes-Bristle long handle. Round #1, filbert #2, #4, Flat #1, #6, #8  Rubber gloves-optional

Palette

Wet wipes
Notebook and pen-for sketches and note taking
Palette scraper is optional to clean palette
Hat for shade, bug repellant and sun screen are always great ideas. Trial sized bottles are useful. 

Zip-lock bags for wet brushes and a small trash bag 

I bring an old towel or box to put my wet painting on for the drive home. Gloves are useful to use since you can throw them away for clean hands. Otherwise, wet wipes are handy.

Bring a lunch and beverage.
