SUNSET AND FULL MOON PAINT OUT

Friday, September 29, 2023

4:00pm – 8:30pm – scheduled time with Steve Ward

Fall arrives this year with the September full moon called the Harvest Moon. This means that the moon rise is close to sunset and close to the first day of fall, allowing farmers late light into the evening to finish their harvests.

A Few things to keep in mind:

Weather forecast- Mix of clouds and sun, High 79, Low 59. Mainly clear evening with winds light and variable. May want to bring an extra layer.

Sunset – 6:34pm – We encourage arriving around 4pm for a quick sunset study. You may also want to prepare your painting with a block-in for the full moon, before complete darkness takes over.

Moonrise – official time is 6:54pm (add about 30 minutes before it’ll be visible in the sky). Plan your time for set up accordingly.

Parking – West lot at the Visitor Center or along the left side of Otter Creek Rd up the hill toward the Dam Walkway.

Set up – To help the rangers and event hosts keep track of us as the light fades, please set up along the Dam Walkway, or near the canoe launch and ranger house. There has been some thinning of trees along this route making it easier to see the lake.

If you haven’t painted at night before, here are some things you’ll need to bring:

  • Clip-on battery-powered LED lights or headlamp to light up both panel and palette
  • A flashlight to get back to your car
  • Bug spray
  • Reminder – no food is allowed, please abide by our ‘leave no trace’ practices, and be extra careful if you bring solvents

A huge thank you to paintout hosts –

Please rsvp to one of the above hosts if you plan to attend! Send email/text with your name, email, and cell number. Rangers need to have contact info for anyone in the park after closing time.

The ranger assigned to assist us will escort us out of the park no later than 8:30pm. The gate will be closed for incoming traffic but is on an automatic sensor for exiting cars.

This is a wonderful opportunity that is not to be missed. A special thanks to Steve Ward for making this paintout possible. If you happen to see Steve or any of the rangers, be sure to thank them for all of their help and support over the last few months in preparation for our show.
