Description: The class offers the opportunity to learn from mistakes. Participants are asked to bring in 5-6 Plein Air sketches or small studio pieces that did not quite work or need some improvement. In class, we will explore ways to improve the paintings and will actually make changes on the painting. The decision to make the suggested changes, or not, is completely up to the artist. This process helps artists learn how to critique their own work. Glazing, “scumbling” and proper procedure to work on a painting that is completely dry will be addressed

  • Bring anything else you need to paint with. Only Gamsol solvent can be used at On Track Studios.
  • Paint, medium and brushes are the artists’ choice.
  •  Bring a lunch. Tea and water will be provided. There is a fridge and microwave available at OnTrack Studios.

Supply list:  Acrylic and Oil painters welcome.

  • Filbert and Flat natural white hog bristle brushes in sizes 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 (I recommend and use Silver Brush Grand Prix Superior Bristle Brushes, but other brushes will do.  Also it is not necessary to have all the sizes unless desired.)
  • For Acrylic Artists ONLY: Masterson’s sta-wet palette system with sponge & paper is a must! – without this system the paint will dry quickly and be difficult to work with (red lid comes with sponge & paper in it, blue lid does not).
  • Palette knife
  • Painting towel- thick white cotton
  • Container to hold water for painting (Medium for Oil Painters)
  • Oil Colors: Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Yellow, Titanium White
  • Acrylic Colors: Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylic Paints (other brands are acceptable) – Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Alizarin Crimson Hue, Ultramarine Blue, N8 Neutral Grey (very pale grey for mixing in place of white)
  • Small Canvas or painting panels (8×8, 10×8, 12×9)

Description: Many tips on how to concentrate on focal points in your work along with composition, as well as tips on painting water.

Frank will demo in the morning. There will be time for questions and answers after the demo. After lunch, students will paint, using the techniques taught during the demo. You may use the demo photo or bring one of your own. At the end of the workshop, we will draw names from a hat and the winner gets the signed morning demo.

Bring a light lunch and a side dish for the Fish Fry.
