Wildlife Painting Opportunities at the Aviary for the Radnor Show!

With the Barbara J. Mapp Aviary Education Center now open at Radnor Lake, you have a terrific opportunity to paint any of four birds of prey for our upcoming Radnor show in early November.  The newest addition to the Aviary is a bald eagle, which was just transferred to the Aviary last week.  In addition to the eagle, there is a great horned owl, a black vulture, and a red-tail hawk. Remember, wildlife paintings are encouraged for the show, and you may use the wildlife photos you shoot as references for your paintings.

Chestnut painters can hike up to the Aviary Center and paint, and/or shoot reference photos, during the Aviary’s operating hours, which are: Wednesdays, 7 a.m.-1 p.m., and Saturdays, 1 p.m.-7 p.m.  Go paint on your own, with one or more painting buddies, or during one of the following organized paint outs:

Wednesday, September 2 – 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. – Ed hosting  (Rangers Sam King and Paul Schauer will give a tour and bird of prey program at 9:00 a.m. and Noon at the Aviary, during which they will take at least one bird out of its cage – a great opportunity for making quick studies or taking photos!  No reservations required for these  programs.)

Saturday, October 10 – 2:00-5:00 p.m. – Marci hosting

For these organized paint outs, plan to meet at the Aviary.   A map to the Aviary has been added to the Resources page on the Members’ website.  (There are restrooms available at the Aviary.)

Directions:  From the West Parking Lot/Visitor Center, along Otter Creek Rd., to Hall Drive, to the Aviary is a total of 1.4 miles.  From the East Parking Lot, along Otter Creek Rd., to Hall Drive, to the Aviary is a total of 0.75 miles.

The Hall Drive section of the hike alone is 0.37 miles and is paved, but steep in a few sections.  This stretch is labeled “Moderate” in hiking difficulty.  So, stretch those quads and hamstrings, pack your light gear and camera, and bring some extra water.  It’s well worth the hike!

Please email Marci at marjorieshicks@gmail.com, or Ed at erouton@bellsouth.net with any questions.
