Two Day Workshop with Joel Knapp

Fun workshop for artists working in acrylics or oils! Students will take a small painting and enlarge it into larger canvas in Joel Knapp’s Studio. Bring your own supplies and lunch each day. To hold your spot, call 615.451.9718. Cost for each student is $100 for the two days of instruction.

Jumpstart Your Art with Anne Blair Brown

This workshop is designed to enhance your knowledge of the basics of oil painting while illuminating the key elements that will further your growth as an artist. Those looking to infuse new energy into their art will gain a deeper knowledge of how to confidently design and execute a painting that looks fresh and spontaneous. “From the hip” exercises in both drawing and painting will reinforce your ability to react emotionally to your subject and complete a painting in the alla prima style. Through demonstrations, Anne will share her secrets for color harmony, solid design, and making a brushstroke count. We will explore the time honored tradition of painting directly from life working with a variety of interesting still life subjects. Individualized instruction will help each student reach their personal goals.

All skill levels welcome. Basic knowledge of drawing and oil painting a must.

This 3 day Intermediate Landscape Studio Workshop, March 1-4, 2012 starts on Thursday evening with an orientation and slide show of masterworks by Roger Dale Brown in order to enhance the student’s understanding of the foundation of a solid painting. The following 3 days will consist of intensive learning, a daily demo combined with a generous amount of paint time for each student to practice the shared techniques. Focus will be on the initial massing in of the chosen scene, assessing value and color properly, and creating distance with temperature changes and color. Each student will also learn how  to effectively use reference photos to re-create an outdoor scene in the studio setting. Read More…


Thursday’s in the ‘Fork with Kevin Menck

Chestnut artist and Cumberland Society of Painters artist Kevin Menck hosts a series of 6 Thursday evening sessions at Leiper’s Creek Gallery, beginning February 16th, 2012!

 

Artists who love to paint the rural landscape will learn the skills to master techniques needed for successful “in-the-field” painting. Through Kevin’s instruction, students will be encouraged to follow the fundamentals of painting and find the opportunity to push themselves to the next level in their artistry. There will be a balance of instruction, demonstrations, and plenty of time to PAINT!

The class will offer demonstrations, painting exercises, and individual instruction.

Learn to think, see, plan and approach your subjects using a modern impressionist approach. Color relationships, design, simplifying, and the benefits of painting from life will be discussed.

The first half of day one, Putnam will demonstrate her painting technique, and explain how color, edges, composition, values, and shapes play an abstract part in conveying a strong visual statement. During the afternoon session, students will participate in small, enriching exercises that will promote an impressionist style. Students paint all of day two with individual and group instruction. Workshop continues into the third day with increasingly difficult challenges, hands-on instruction, and closing discussion.

This fun and informative workshop will be a combination of furthering your knowledge of the plein air experience while enhancing your time in the studio. First, Anne will walk you through the process of creating an accurate plein air study. Exercises in value and composition will reinforce your ability to “see” in the outdoor setting. Focus will be placed on simplifying your subject and capturing the essence of the scene in changing light conditions. Then, Anne will show you how to interpret the study to a larger painting in the studio. She will share her secrets for color harmony, dynamic brushwork, and luminous light effects. Discussions will include choosing the proper plein air equipment, maximizing your time outdoors, and balancing the use of photo reference with field studies.

Gayle Levee is accepting registrations for her second Seaside Painting Workshop this summer. This August you will have the opportunity to paint with her on the rugged coast of Cape Ann, walking in the footsteps of such greats as Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam, Maurice Prendergast, and Cecilia Beaux.
