Sharon Gates, a native of Alabama, is an award-winning artist and instructor. She began painting in oils then studied watercolor after moving to the Gulf Coast. Sharon fell in love with the creativity and free flowing nature of watercolor which led her to acrylics, ink and experimental techniques such as collage, layering, etc. She found all this to be quite useful when she returned to her current home in Birmingham, AL, and to oil painting. Her newfound passion is plein air painting. Sharon has studied art extensively over the years with various master painters including Kim English, Kenn Backhaus, Roger Dale Brown, Carole Gray-Weihman, Nancy Chaboun, Don Andrews, Stephen Quiller, and Ted Minchin to name a few.
Sharon is Director of the Alabama Plein Air Artists, President of the Birmingham Art Association, and a past president and Signature member of the Alabama Watercolor Society. She is also a member of the Women Painters of the Southeast and has been juried into the prestigious Energen Show representing the best of Alabama artists each time she has entered. Sharon has taught classes and workshops at the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Eastern Shore Art Academy, as well as in her private studio. Her work can be found on her website as well as in collections throughout the U.S.
